Choose the Right Custom Embroidered Polo Shirts:

Polos: The Placket

The placket is the part of the polo shirt where the buttons are located.  On most men's polo shirts the placket is basically the same.   Plackets on ladies golf shirts can vary greatly, ranging from a reversed version of the standard men's style to a combination V-neck button polo.  In addition to the basic solid color sport shirts, some polo shirts have trim detail on the placket.  Placket accents can include grosgrain ribbon, piping or a contrasting fabric color. Buttons can also add to the look of the shirt.  Buttons can range from white pearlized and dyed-to-match buttons to specialty buttons.  Depending on your logo, polo shirt buttons can reinforce your image.

 

Polos: The Fabric

Embroidered polo shirt fabrics range from basic cotton, ring spun and pima cotton to cotton polyester blends and 100% polyester.  Generally speaking, cotton polo shirts are cooler; cotton/poly blend shirts will be more fade, wrinkle and shrink-resistant.  Performance fabric polos offer special benefits such as moisture-wicking and wrinkle-resistant features.  Some spot resistant shirts are treated with a fabric protection material to resist stains.  Other polo shirt fabrics receive special treatments such as pigment dye and garment wash to give the fabric a well-worn look while other polo fabrics with IL50 certification are treated to withstand 50 industrial washings.

 

Polos: The Fit

Not all custom polo shirts have the same fit.  Size measurements, including chest, hem and sleeve lengths, are available for most garments.  When you view shirts online many styles include a diagram indicating the cut of the sport shirt.  Polo shirts modeled on teens and young adults will have a closer, trimmer fit.  Golf shirts containing spandex will cling to the body. When choosing sizes remember that a 100% cotton polo shirts will shrink more than polos made from a blend fabric.

 

Polos: The Sizing

One of the recent developments in the garment industry is the addition of more polo shirt sizes.  Many custom embroidered polo shirts are now available up to size 6X for men, 4X for women, tall and junior sizes.  Some shirts also have a youth companion style.

 

Polos: Trim Details

Many polo shirts have a trim accent color on the collar, sleeves or placket.  Although too much color detailing can distract from your logo, a contrasting color on the collar that repeats a color in your logo can add emphasis to your logo.  Although not all trim colors will work with every logo, wearing golf shirts with an accent color can give your logo a unique look and make your custom embroidered logo pop!

 

Ladies Companion Shirts

In addition to the traditional reversed placket and the V-neck button sport shirts, many women's companion shirts have V-neck and johnny collars.  Ladies polos are designed for women with shorter hem and sleeve lengths, slimmer plackets and trimmer body measurements.  Also, many women's polo shirts are available in more feminine shades such as pistachio and pale pink.

Some polos are available with coordinating pocket, long sleeve and long sleeve pocket styles so everyone maintain a uniform look through the year.

If you need polo shirts that coordinate with button down shirts then you can choose a coordinating style with the same color options.

 

Designer Labels

Designer polo shirts such as Nike, Adidas and Tiger Woods can be embroidered with your business logo.  Many of these luxurious golf shirts offer special features such as Nike's "Dry Fit" and "Fit Dry" performance fabrics.  These sport shirts often have their own designer logo embroidered on the garment in a tone-on-tone shade.  Usually this logo is subtle but this isn't always true so check before ordering to be certain your logo doesn't compete with the designer's logo.

 

Logo Placement

Most polo shirts are embroidered with a left chest logo but a logo can be placed on the right side. Individual names can be located on the right side or underneath a logo if there is room.  Additional logos can be placed on either sleeve with the most common placement being on the right side to balance a left chest logo.

Embroidery On Different Colored Polos?

You can mix sport shirt colors when having your logo embroidered on shirts. Remember what colors are in your logo so you pick custom business shirts  that complement it but don't be concerned that dark text won't be readable on a dark shirt.  Your text color can be adjusted to accommodate darker shirts.

Can The Same Logo Be Used For Polos and Hats?

The same design can be used for both golf shirts and hats if the logo was set-up for hats.  If the embroidered design was set-up for shirts then it might need to be redone for hats to avoid having  registration issues.  If you are thinking of getting polo shirts and you may purchase hats in the future tell your embroiderer.

What Is a Good Font For Embroidered Polo Shirts?

When designing your own logo for custom embroidered polo shirts choose a font that has some thickness in the letters.  A font with fine detail and narrow serifs might look great when printed but won't show up well on an embroidered pique polo shirt where there is a tendency for the stitches to sink into the fabric.  This tendency can be avoided somewhat but your embroidered business name will stand out and be more effective if you pick a font that has wider columns.
