There are a number of special application threads used for embroidery including fire fighter, frosted matt, metallic, burmilana and glow-in-the-dark. While most of these threads wouldn't be used to embroider a sweater, you might find that metallic thread adds sparkle to a holiday sweater or glo-in-the-dark thread can be used for a special design.

Fire Fighter - this thread is flame resistant. Its used for embroidering uniforms that must be flame resistant.
Frosted Matt - this thread is extremely color fast so its resistant to fading from sunlight. Its matt finish gives it an especially clear appearance and it can withstand industrial laundering.
Metallic - this thread adds sparkle to embroidered designs. Its often used for small details in holiday designs.
Burmilana - this is a thicker thread that has a hand embroidered look.
Glo-in-the-Dark - this thread will glow for a long time after its been exposed to light for a short period.
